Jewelry inspection needs a wide field, controlled reflected light and enough space to rotate a ring or use a probe. Magnification alone cannot identify a gemstone, but the right microscope can reveal workmanship and condition.
What a jewelry microscope can show
Useful checks include worn prongs, loose-looking settings, solder seams, maker’s marks, scratches, porosity and repair evidence. These observations support inspection; they do not replace gemological testing, metal assays or professional valuation.
Stereo versus digital
Stereo optics are preferable when depth and handwork matter. Digital microscopes are convenient for photographing hallmarks and sharing condition images. Trinocular stereo microscopes combine both workflows when documentation is important.
Lighting reflective metal and stones
Bright ring lights can produce flat glare on polished metal. Adjustable intensity, diffusion and low-angle side lighting help reveal relief and surface defects. Darkfield and specialized gemological lighting serve different purposes and should not be assumed from a general inspection microscope.
Magnification and working distance
About 7× to 30× covers many bench checks. Higher power is useful for a small defect but makes hand movement harder. Favor a stable stand, smooth focus and generous clearance over an inflated maximum-magnification claim.
